With family planning, Dr. Barrere provides you with counseling, recommendations, and treatments you need to prevent unintended pregnancies to keep you healthy and in control of your body.

Family planning also includes sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention and treatment, so you know the steps you can take to protect yourself from contracting an infection or eradicating/managing one should it occur.

What can I expect during family planning?

The specifics of your family planning depend on your age, sexual history, health history, and your current and future pregnancy plans.

Dr. Barrere takes a patient-centered approach to care and first spends time talking to you about your family planning needs. He also reviews your medical and gynecological history and asks about your sexual activity.

Your family planning appointment may also include a physical. Dr. Barrere may also perform a pelvic exam and testing for STDs if he has concerns, but these additional exams and tests aren’t always necessary during a family planning appointment.

After your discussion, Dr. Barrere reviews your birth control options, which may include:

He reviews how each birth control method works, its pros and cons, and helps you decide which method makes the best choice for you based on your current health needs and pregnancy plans.

When should I start preconception counseling?

Dr. Barrere also provides preconception counseling. You should schedule your preconception counseling before you start trying to get pregnant.

During preconception counseling, Dr. Barrere conducts a comprehensive history and physical to assess your current health. He then provides recommendations to improve your health and well-being and the health of your baby at the moment of conception.

His recommendations may include:

  • Adding a prenatal vitamin
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Smoking cessation
  • Abstaining from alcohol

Dr. Barrere may also talk to you and your partner about preconception genetic testing to assess your risk of passing an inherited disease to your baby.
